古代人非常正視女人的三從四德，認為女人一旦嫁人就要從一而終，如果改嫁或被夫家休棄，都會受人鄙棄，這樣的女人比孀婦還讓人難以接管，所以就有了「寧娶孀婦，不娶生妻」的鄙諺。

曩昔沒什麼婚姻自由與男女同等，這句話是封建時代的產物。現在時期在轉變，隨著時候的更迭，女性地位的提拔，這句老話也落空了本來的意義，人人都有尋求幸福的權力。

「生妻」一詞最早呈現在漢朝李陵的《答蘇武書》中，昔時李陵率領五千精兵與匈奴八萬馬隊站於浚稽山，由於軍力差異，李陵戰敗降服佩服匈奴，而且迎娶公主為妻，給匈奴單于當差。

蘇武與李陵私情甚好，漢帝命蘇武給李陵寫信召其回國，李陵在信中說：「老母終堂，生妻去帷」，意思就是說母親已經年邁去世，年青的妻子也已改嫁。
